Lib Dems and local residents campaign to make dangerous junction safer

The Lib Dems led by Cllr Anthea Sweeney are campaigning with local residents to improve the dangerous junction on the A148. On Friday 8th June Cllr Sweeney sent the County Council Highways Department a petition with over 300 signatories of local people including 14 District Councillors from all parties. The petition outlines the need to reduce the speed limit from the current 60mph to 40mph and improve the overall visibility of the junction

The move comes after the most recent serious traffic crash (10th June 2011) involving the car of a resident of West Beckham with two small children on board and a motorcycle.  Statistics from the police show that from 2007 to 2009 there have been nine collisions resulting in injury.

Cllr Anthea Sweeney said “I have a great deal of concern that every time we cross the junction we take a risk with our lives. A lot of elderly people use the junction and their reactions are slower than those of younger drivers.”

Cllr Sweeney working with the Lib Dem group on North Norfolk District Council is to ask officers if money is available for making the junction safer. Local Parish councils are also considering whether members would consider helping to fund improvements to the junction.

Norman Lamb is also calling for improvements to be made, saying ‘I urge the County Council to improve this junction. It has been a notorious accident hotspot over the years and this needs to change.”

“I welcome Anthea Sweeney’s approach to this, getting local people on board to bring the issue to the County Council’s attention”
